Smokeless Stove Project
Here is the problem we are trying to address.
A typical house in the Terai (lowland) region in Nepal is a hut with no windows. One of the rooms is used for cooking and eating, whereas the other ones are used for sleeping. Many huts are simply one room. In the center of the main/only room is a pit for the fire which provides all the heat and light for the home as well as the place where the meals are prepared.
The problem is that the fire fills the hut with smoke. Children cough and wheeze constantly and
develop eye and skin infections. Every village has children disabled and disfigured by the burns they have suffered after crawling into the fire pit. Children and the elderly die from respiratory tract infections and bronchitis.
We have found an answer!
The Smokeless Stove. It has a fitted door and adjustable flue, which are said to reduce timber use by 30% to 50%. The stovetop has three fire holes which are ideally suited to cooking the traditional Nepali meal "Daal Bhat Tarkari", which consists of rice, with a lentil or bean soup and a vegetable dish. The slot in the top makes it possible to cook the Nepali flat bread (Roti) without opening the front and losing heat. This design means the food can all be cooked at once.
A smokeless stove provides cooking facilities without the physical dangers of an open fire. In the winter, it offers heat in an otherwise heatless house. It saves the women and girls of the family from much backbreaking work cutting and carrying heavy loads, of wood.
It combats the health hazards of inhaling the smoke of a wood fire. It helps to slow down the shrinking of the forests and associated erosion of the soil (landslides are a major cause of death during the monsoon season).
The women will also have more time available to start a kitchen garden, and spend more time with their children.
The provision of smokeless stoves is a one small, but very important part of our Community Development work in Nepal. It is making a huge difference in the lives of the villagers, especially the girls, women, and the elderly, and it will help in reducing deforestation.
By providing a smokeless stove we can make a big difference in the lives of every family member.
